Location

For those who find the downtown din too much and the suburbs too little, Carpenter offers a Goldilocks setting: Zilker, a green pocket just south of Lady Bird Lake that maintains leafy serenity with urban access.

You’re walking distance to Barton Springs, Zilker Park, and the start of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike & Bike Trail—a local favorite for early morning jogs or meandering strolls.

With the Barton Creek Greenbelt nearby and South Congress a short drive away, it’s a location that allows you to be in an out of the scene.

Make sure to bring trainers, not just sandals. You’ll want to walk—a lot.

Design

Originally built in 1948 as the Carpenters Local 1266 Union Hall, the building’s adaptive reuse is not only a nod to history, but a commitment to it.

Specht Architects took the lead on preserving the integrity of the structure, while Bunkhouse’s seasoned hand brought the interiors to life. Think custom tile-work and preserved wood veneers that make the space feel honest.

Vintage pieces from local curators like The Renner Project add more to the design narrative, while the surrounding pecan trees and landscaping by Word + Carr soften the building’s industrial edges.

The overall effect is very Austin—unpretentious and design-literate.

Rooms

The 93 rooms are generous in glass and light. Floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces come standard, giving even the smaller categories a bit of openness.

Opt for the Large King if you’re staying more than a night or two—the extra space really makes a difference, especially with the desk setup and sofa area.

Furnishings are custom, leaning into texture rather than trend. Expect bespoke lighting and natural materials that bring plenty of warmth.

Food & Drink

Carpenters Hall is a hotel restaurant you wish more cities had. Executive Chef Jeffrey Hundelt delivers vegetable-forward dishes that are seasonal, bright, and unmistakable Texan.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all worth your time, but locals swear by the brunch—so book ahead.

There’s also the poolside setup (menu available throughout the property), and the lobby’s Carpenter Coffee Bar which shifts identities throughout the day. Mornings mean espressos and breakfast tacos. Evenings bring craft cocktails and bar snacks. The drinks program leans organic and biodynamic, but with enough irreverence to keep things fun.
